It can cause a sensitivity to sulfites and definitely may contribute to acne as skin issues are typically symptoms of gut issues. Check out these articles:

Have a question. Can leaky gut also cause sulfite sensitivities, and could this contribute to an inability to heal chronic acne? My son has been struggling with severe acne for the last three years, and we are trying everything we know to heal his gut. Do you do office visits? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

I’ve been diagnosed with IBS 2 1/2 years ago and the several doctors and procedures I’ve gone through have not helped at all. After doing lots of research, it all seems to be coming back to a unhealthy Gut! I went on a Clean Detoxification diet and just about died! My stomach blew up, I had constant diarrhea with severe cramping and gained weight! Another words, my IBS just got worse instead of better! I couldn’t tolerate the “healthy foods”, even though they tasted really yummy! I’m going to try a Parasite cleanse next I think…I’m at a loss since I can’t tolerate Clean Foods right now. Any suggestions would be helpful. Also I have other friends with some issues, but I can’t figu out how to print just your articles, without getting 10 pages of additional advertising and comments, is there a way to print just your article?? Thanks so much Dr. axe, looking forward to your response!

It’s hard to say. It sounds like you may still have leaky gut. Everyone takes a different amount of time to heal. I would check out these articles and look at doing the GAPS diet which may be very beneficial for you:

The doctor said thats all it should take and didn’t do a follow up test. These supplement did not include any of yours. Since then I have delt with extreme itching all over my body and now my legs hurt constantly and I have more and more food allergies. My question is should I find a new doctor or just doctor myself? I am so tired all the time too. Do I also still have leaky gut? How long does it take to heal?
Thanks in advance.

I have recently been diagnosed with FFA, frontal fibrosing alopecia, which is an autoimmune disease. I was wondering if leaky gut could be the cause of this condition. I am also overweight and have a sensitivity to gluten.

Thank you for your insight and your wonderful information!

I would cut out sugar from the diet as well. I would also add in 16oz of bone broth daily. Once the gut is healed, foods that his body tolerates can be added back in slowly. Symptoms should start to resolve when the gut his healing. I would also check out the GAPS diet as this is a great way to heal the gut.

Those reactions are your body telling you that it is not ready for those foods so I would cut those out of your diet and only reintroduce them once your gut has had time to heal. I would look into the GAPS diet

I left the same message on your face book page asking you these questions ,But will write it again here.

I have been diagnosed with leaky gut, coeliac ,grave’s disease. Chronic fatigue .

I have only found your website its great,

I am taking all your supplements except the liquorice root and quercetin .

My question is when I eat some foods I get a lot of rashes which are very painful and extremely itchy.

I am after a natural anti histamine to try stop this form happening till my gut heals what do you suggest??.

I have been told about daosin but live in Australia cant get it here and it would be expensive to buy online.

If I take all of your supplements would that help stop the rashes form happening.

I am into stage 2 of the SCD diet as I found this diet first .Been very hard.I want to heal.

I want to be so well ,know life it not meant to be suffering .,

I really would be very grateful for any of your amazing wisdom.

Thanking you kindly

Blessings Lisa down under 0)

Before the diet he was diagnosed with a severe expressive language disorder, he was also chronically constipated and would sometimes go 2 weeks with out a bowel movement, he had no appetite (constipation). He was also beginning to get chronic headaches. His pediatrician tested him for celiac, which of course came back negative. Two weeks in to removing the G/D his speech tripled, his appetite doubled, and he was having a text book perfect bowel movement everyday, the head aches also disappeared. I believed before we started the diet that he could be on the Autisic spectrum so I had him booked at the Glenrose hospital to have him assessed. We had started the diet at this time. The first tests came back inconclusive so they brought him back to do”the gold standard” autistic test. to which they concluded that he did not quit meet the spectrum. I was relieved but upset because I was sure that he was on the spectrum, but I felt that the diet had possibly recovered him. Fortunately but unfortunately I removed the gluten and the dairy at the same time. Around that time I also stared him on children’s DHA, Similase Jr. and Super Nu Thera. So we aren’t really sure what was working and what wasn’t. Right now and for the past 4 years he has been GFDF no supplements.

My questions are:
Is there anything else I can do, am I missing anything?
Will he have to be on this diet forever?
Are there any tests I can have done?
If I repair his gut can he eat G&D?
How do I and how will I know his gut is repaired?

Thank you so much for your time,

For the past three years I have been battling anxiety, depression, hyperthyroidism (with a benign tumour that was removed), pericarditis, and now lupus. I am allergic to EVERYTHING. The only relief I have is when I fast. I have three boys I am raising on my own and the 5-year-old has had such issues that I have pulled him out of kindergarten and have an appointment with a pediatric psychiatrist. I am very careful with our diet. We eat 80-90% organic food, goat’s milk (which is not always available) and I have stopped taking NSAIDS, but need plaquenil and tylenol 3s to function because the lupus pain is so severe. The chronic stress element is what really makes sense to me. I have been through two very bad relationships and am a single mom, dealing with this disease. The stress is immense. I also live in a very cold environment. This information is very helpful and I am going to put many of your suggestions to work right away. Starting with organic yogurt tomorrow for breakfast.

One very important question: We use honey to sweeten but no sugar at home, but the boys often get sugary treats elsewhere with other family members, special occasions, etc. How do I help them without being the mean mom? And, what about honey? Is it OK and how much?

The drs put her on the typical thyroid medicine that doesn’t seem to help with weight gain, tiredness, brittle hair etc. About a month ago she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. She just doesn’t feel good. Oh and her recent colonoscopy found 2 precancerous polyps.
She has tried different diets, went to a clinic in Texas that had great reviews which gave her high hopes that they could help and cost a lot of $$. Took the money but no help.
Is there REALLY anything that can be done to help her?? I just don’t want her to mix and match things they could end up hurting her. She has 5 children that need her and a family that loves her so much.
We have read up on eating fermented vegetables, no gluten, no sugar etc. So much information to try and digest from so many different sources.
Any answers would be appreciated

I know how all of this started and apart from a lot of stress I did competitive bodybuilding last year which I now see has probably created my leaky gut which in turn has crashed my adrenals. Your articles make the most sense out of anything I have read. I want to get better as the terrible impact this is having on my life and family and friends is devastating. I would very much like to know if you have any books with specific food plans or do you write food plans for sufferers personally? I am in New Zealand and have struggled to find a nutritionalist who is expert enough to nail this for me.

When he was a baby, he had eczema really bad, but over the years it has subsided. However, this nausea thing has not. We have tried removing gluten and it seemed to help a little, but not a lot. He refuses to eat or drink anything dairy after 6pm (his rule, not mine) because he’s afraid of getting sick. He is a very healthy eater, but we do not buy organic. I grow a couple of veggies that he likes (cukes & tomatoes) and he loves it, but nothing else I planted grew (used non-gmo seeds). Anyway, our budget is tight, but I want to help him. I just can’t afford to do a lot trial and error when it comes to food. I use doTerra’s Digestzyn for his nausea at night and it helps. Aside from that and the waning eczema, could he have leaky gut? I took him to the doc, but all they wanted to give him was Prevacid (15mg).

This food on skin test specifically looks for IgE antibodies while the other one looks for IgG antibodies. Both are immune responses from the body but are different immune responses. Unfortunately what may not cause an immune response with the IgE antibodies may cause one with the IgG antibodies. For example, I commonly see patients who can handle gluten products with their hands and on their skin (IgE) and not have a reaction but have strong sensitivities or intolerances to gluten when consumed (IgG). In the case of leaky gut, I recommend IgG testing over IgE.

Awesome thank you for your response. The links are very helpful. I am going to start using a whole lot of these methods for his diet. I was just talking to my wife who is terrified of having to get blood drawn from our son again after last time. She said something about a test where they can tape foods to you and see if you have a reaction. Have you ever used this method and do you think that it is accurate?

Thanks again,

I think he would do well on the GAPS diet. I also think an IgG food allergy test could be very beneficial. Unfortunately the only way to get results from this test is either through blood serum or dried blood spots. (I’ve done both methods and think the serum is much easier). Below are a few articles on the GAPS diet and natural leaky gut diet treatment.

Ok I just saw your link above regarding the healing steps so that kind of answers my question I think. I have another one though, Is there any way to figure out if he may have any other allergies to certain foods without drawing blood? We have already had to have blood drawn twice and last time was a bad experience and I wonder if there is another way? Also do you think that this is something that needs to be done or will the tests be inaccurate since he is battling leaky gut?

Thanks again,
Chris

By: Chris https://draxe.com/health/7-signs-symptoms-you-have-leaky-gut/#comment-21167 Sat, 23 Aug 2014 14:15:23 +0000 https://draxe.com/?p=16303#comment-21167 My son is 6 years old and has been battling psoriasis for about a year and is 80% covered right now. He has always had digestive issues since he was about two years old. He developed Psoriasis after getting strep throat and going on antibiotics last September. It has really taken over his entire body and face like wild fire since then. We have seen many Dermatologist which deny the link between diet and the disease and have just prescribed steroid creams, light treatments and medicated shampoo. All which we tried for a week or two but then stopped after no change because the creams are bad for skin and the light treatments were doing more harm than good.

We even went as far as getting a tonsillectomy after some research saw the link between the T cells in the tonsils causing the immune system to over react and people clearing after the procedure. His tonsils were enlarged which caused the recommendation of the procedure from a few different docs.

After all of this we did an allergy test and it came back that he is Gluten Intolerant. So after this and the reading of the book by John Pagano a while back we are convinced that he has Leaky Gut Syndrome. So a little over a week ago we removed Gluten from his diet and added in a digestive enzyme for the gut lining and probiotics and yogurt daily. We noticed after we had some grass fed beef that his stomach was bothering him so we are removing red meat as well for now.

My question is are there any more steps to take to heal the gut quicker than what we are already doing? Also are there any more foods that we should avoid that are hard on the gut while it is healing? It is really rough on him battling this disease and we just want to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to help him. Thank you for your time and research!

Thanks,
Chris

Many of your diets include grass fed protien which I understood was a dairy derivative. Shoud someone with Leaky gut use the grass fed protien? If not what is the best substitute? I assume it is not soy, thanks.

I couldn’t be more thrilled! The endocrinologist told me very firmly that I would never be able to go off thyroid hormones when I started really asking questions. Nice man. False information!

The body is designed by our Maker to heal! I have worked through healing leaky gut… gluten free and loaded up on healthy fats and broth and KEFIR! No meds since Dec 2013! Absolutely amazing! Dr. Axe is receiving a very loud AMEN on all he teaches about leaky gut! It is a devastating condition BUT WE CAN HEAL!

I would make your goat’s milk into kefir using a starter kit like this one:

I think colostrum works great for many people with leaky gut but not for everyone. I like the brand Mt. Capra for colostrum.

What is A2 milk?

A2 is the name of a milk protein that was in all dairy herds until a natural mutation occurred in the European herd thousands of years ago.

Dairy milk usually contains a mixture of A1 and A2 beta casein proteins, but milk from goats, sheep, camels, buffalo, yaks, donkeys is either mostly or completely A2. Some cow breeds such as Jersey and Guernsey cows have traditionally produced A2 milk (although today they have to be tested and certified to be sure) whereas milk from black and white cows such as Holsteins usually produce mostly the A1 protein variant. In the 1970s, when Australian dairy herds switched from using Jersey cows to Holsteins, some of the dairy farmers’ families at that time noticed adverse effects on their health and have reported to us that they kept a Jersey cow for their own use. Any breed of cow can be used in selective breeding to produce A2 milk again. Since 2003, specially produced A2 milk has been available in Australia.

WHY have no doctors — and I’ve been to a TON — EVER told me this???? I’m almost 50 years old and have been dealing with this for half my life and ALL of my marriage!

I came off over 12 years of injecting Enbrel/Humira in March because I received some scary news about my bloodwork last Fall which ended up fine but with a possible diagnosis of Non-Hogkins Lymphoma, that was enough to raise the red flags and search for natural remedies.

I am a Yoga Instructor and now own a home-based yoga and wellness studio. I am a walking testament to the power of natural healing, especially with DoTerra essential oils. After going off the biologics in March preceding knee surgery (my 8th surgery endured because of psoriatic arthritis!!) in April, I decided to remain off the meds and heal naturally. The first 4-5 months were great as I’m vegetarian with fish, gluten free and 90% dairy free. However, after we went on a family vacation in Puerto Rico in July and I could not remain gluten free, not only did my psoriasis flare with my scalp almost completely covered and patches on my legs but also my arthritis! I don’t remember this much pain!! As I don’t teach yoga in the summer, my body was really suffering even trying to do yoga on my own.

After more digging, I found the book “Healing Psoriasis: the natural alternative” by John Pagano, DC. This is where I first read of the Leaky Gut Syndrome and WOW, what an eye opener!! Then you posted this great article and everything is becoming clearer and clearer…… As a teenager, I lived with strep throat to the point of having my tonsils removed after my freshman year of college. I haven’t had strep since. However, I’m convinced now that all those antibiotics dissolved my gut…. I’ve had digestive issues since college and even had a colonoscopy at age 23!

So here I am, almost 50 years old and have completely changed my diet, drink the Slippery Elm Bark tea every morning for 4 days so far…. warm lemon juice…… apple cider vinegar diluted…. finally gave up coffee and alcohol….. and of course all the diet changes which I was already following pretty closely but now tweaked it more by eliminating the nightshade vegetable! I will also add the items you suggested in your article and see how it goes!!

For those out there struggling… THERE IS HOPE! You MUST have perseverance, patience and determination to heal naturalizing…. Not only do most diseases begin in the gut, but they also begin in the MIND! Calm the mind; calm the body…. Namaste’

I’ve done a lot of research and have seen the benefits. I’ve been taking it for about three weeks. What are your thoughts on colostrum?

A blood drawn food allergy test was sent to Biotech Labs by my naturopath. The results were shocking. There isn’t a lot of food I can eat with out having allergic reactions. There is a supplement called gi revive by designs for health that I feel are helping. I’ve lost 32 pounds. In my case, stress is the trigger. I am 55, don’t take medication and have always paid attention to what I eat. I also make daily anti inflammatory shakes with the one fruit I can eat -blueberries. Luckily my GP is aware of this and is up on it. It’s still a struggle, but “episodes” seem to be farther apart.

Yes. And it can take longer than you think sometimes for complete recovery and you could be more sensitive to flare ups for a while. I would recommend you consider taking quality digestive enzymes and probiotics for 3 months. Check out the probiotics on draxe.com and garden of life enzymes.

Check out these two articles. I would have him stay on stage 1 GAPS diet for a few months. For A2 dairy going to your local farmers market and buying goat’s milk yogurt or raw goat’s milk and making your own homemade yogurt fermenting for 24-28 hours is the best.
